주인공인 엠마는 부유한 농가의 외동딸로 정열적인 여성이다. 의사 샤를보바리 와 결혼하지만 결혼생활에 지루함을 느끼고 루돌프와 바람을 피온다. 바람둥이 루돌프와 관계가 끊어지자 젊은 서기 레옹과 밀회를 즐긴다.
플로베르는보바리 부인을 발표하여 미풍양속을 헤쳤다고 하여 종교에 회부되었으나 무죄로 판결받았다.

Emma, the protagonist of the novel, is the passionate daughter of a wealthy farm owner. She marries a doctor, Charles Bovary, but soon grows bored of married life and has an affair with a womanizer named Rodolphe. When their affair ends, she enters into a new one with a man named Leon.
The religious court accused Flaubert of an offense to the public and of religious morality but was acquitted.
